A container ship passes during the ceremony, the melancholic moan of it’s horn causing the guests to jump and then laugh. A foreign seaman, dwarfed against the immense bulk of the floating behemoth, waves as he passes, bound for Singapore or Hong Kong. His journey is just beginning. As the ship is piloted out of the harbor, the couple kiss, beginning their own voyage. Points unknown lie ahead– smooth sailing at times, the doldrums, squalls and squabbles, detours, and finally arrivals. And yet, another destination is always ahead, beckoning us to steady on.
A maritime history.
Savannah wears its rich maritime history on her slightly stained sleeve. From the rugged beauty of the old wharfs along River Street, to the mechanical repetition of the modern container ship port, our fair city is linked intimately to the sea. Lara and David got married on Hutchinson Island, GA across the river from Savannah, GA at the Westin Savannah Harbor Resort and Spa. This location offers arguably the best vantage point in the city to watch this culture unfold. The container ships become a spectacle of their own, massive floating buildings trudging resolutely by, Savannah’s City Hall dome, leafed in gold, taking it all in. The guests and the happy couple enjoyed a truly unique Savannah experience.
